It has come to my attention, that it has been far too long, given the movement this season, since we’ve done a proper update to the 40-man roster. Based on a quick search, it seems as though we haven’t done an update since last December. This was after the Cardinals signed Dexter Fowler and made their protective decisions for the Rule Five draft like on Magneuris Sierra, the A-ball player who was destined to spend multiple seasons in the minors before getting called up.
In any event, this is what the 40-man roster looked like back in December:
Hey, remember Matt Adams? What about Jhonny Peralta. Surely you can’t forget Jonathan Broxton. At that time, the roster had 40 players on it.
Here are the moves affecting the 40-man since then:
- March 29, Cardinals purchased the contract of Eric Fryer and placed Zach Duke on the 60-day disabled list
- April 24, Anthony Garcia outrighted to the minors
- May 20, Matt Adams traded to Braves for Juan Yepez
- May 27, Cardinals purchase the contract of John Brebbia and designated Miguel Socolovich for assignment
- May 28, Cardinals purchase Paul DeJong’s contract from Triple-A
- May 31, Jonathan Broxton released
- June 7, Cardinals purchase contract of Chad Huffman
- June 9, Jhonny Peralta designated for assignment
- June 11, Cardinals claim Sean Gilmartin off waivers from the Mets
Not a ton of moves, but here’s what the 40-man roster looks like now, differentiating those on the active roster from those who are not.
*The original image had Sam Tuivailala not on the active roster. How could I have thought there were only seven active relievers? Thanks to CRay for pointing this out in the comments.
A few notes:
- Sean Gilmartin could be listed as a starter or reliever and he made his last appearance as a starter in Memphis, but he is unlikely to be a starter for the Cardinals and it fit into the space better as a reliever.
- The roster is currently at 39 players meaning the Cardinals could still add another player without cutting anyone.
- While the roster is at 39 players, the team actually has two free slots as Alex Reyes coul easily be moved to the 60-day disabled list. Teams can’t move players to the 60-day disabled list until the roster is full so that hasn’t been necessary
I felt like an update was necessary given some of the big names who have left the orster of late as well as some unknowns who might make for a good sporcle quiz at some point. Also, the roster could look a lot different in a month. We are a little over a week into the 4-6 week timetable John Mozeliak laid out when the coaching staff changes were announced. That period is now down to 17-31 days.
