Daily Farm Report: Cards' Affiliates Go 2-2, Allow 0 Home Runs to Scooter Gennett

Triple A: New Orleans 6 - Memphis 4

  • Harrison Bader (CF): 1-4, R, 2B, K
  • Chad Huffman (LF) 2-4, R, 2B, RBI, K
  • Luke Voit (1B): 0-2, RBI, BB
  • Carson Kelly (C): 1-4, R
  • Rangel Ravelo (RF): 1-3, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB
  • Patrick Wisdom (3B): 0-4, K
  • Breyvic Valera (2B): 1-4
  • Marco Gonzales (SP): 4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, HR
  • Trey Nielsen (RP): 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K

Harrison Bader has 9 hits including 2 doubles in his last 4 games and has only struck out twice...Rangel Ravelo is a minor league journeyman with over 600 career games in the White Sox and A's organizations. The Redbirds picked him up off of the discard pile earlier this year and he's having the best 90 plate appearances of his career hitting .358 with 3 homers and 6 doubles...Marco Gonzales struggled with his command last night, he threw 92 pitches and was unable to make it out of the 5th. He gave up his 5th long ball of the season, it was not hit by Scooter Gennett...Trey Nielsen has 20 strikeouts and 5 walks in 23.2 relief innings split between Springfield and Memphis.

Double A: Springfield 4 - NW Arkansas 2

  • Oscar Mercado (CF): 2-5, 2 R, 2B, 3B
  • Magneuris Sierra (RF): 4-4, 2B, RBI, BB
  • Anthony Garcia (LF): 0-4, RBI, K
  • Jacob Wilson (3B): 1-3, R, BB, K
  • Zac Gallen (SP): 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K

Oscar Mercado's Mercado's wRC+ is creeping up near 150. His BABIP is over .400, but his ISO is almost double his highest previous full-season mark. It's hard to tell how much of his breakout is due to batted ball luck and playing in the Texas League, but given his struggles before this year it's still fun to watch and hope...Magneuris Sierra's 4 hit night pushed his AA average up to .333...Zac Gallen's Springfield debut wasn't his most efficient outing, but he kept the ball on the ground and limited the damage. The zero home runs he allowed last night was 4 less than the Cardinals gave up to Scooter Gennett.

Class A Advanced: Ft. Myers @ Palm Beach - Cancelled (Rain)

Palm Beach was scheduled to complete last night's suspended game and play a regularly scheduled game as well, but both games were banged. Since no games were played Scooter Gennett did not hit any home runs.

Class A: Kane County 3 - Peoria 2

  • Kolten Wong (2B): 0-3, R, BB, K, SB
  • Shane Billings (LF): 3-4, R, BB, K, SB
  • Andrew Knizner (C): 0-4, K
  • Juan Yepez (3B): 0-4, K
  • Jose Martinez (SS): 0-4, K
  • Dylan Carlson (RF): 0-4, K
  • Nick Plummer (CF): 0-4, K
  • Bryan Dobzanski (SP): 5.2 IP 9 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K

Kolten Wong began his rehab assignment last night. Given the state of the big club and the fact that his elbow injury was much less serious than the team initially thought his tour of the Cardinals affiliates will likely be brief...No I did not make a mistake copying and pasting, there were just a lot of "0-4, K" in the box score...Bryan Dobzanski's brief pro career has not been particularly notable. His K% is below average and he allows too many free passes for a pitcher with his profile. One thing that does stand out is home run suppression. He has a HR/FB under five for his career and has allowed only 7 home runs in 160 pro innings. Less than a full season's worth of innings spread across 4 years and 4 different levels of professional baseball is probably not enough evidence to say that the lack of home runs thus far is something we should necessarily expect to continue, but it bears watching. Another piece of evidence to support the idea that the ability to limit home runs is, in fact, a repeatable skill for Dobzanski and not just luck is the fact that he did not allow a single home run to Scooter Gennett last night.

Dominican Summer League: DSL Cardinals 5 - DSL Rockies 4

In yesterday's DFR I mentioned that I rarely highlight individual players from the Cardinal's DSL club. I did want to be sure to include a box score in case you wanted to check to see if any of the Card's DSL pitchers allowed a home run to Scooter Gennett last night. (They did not.)
