Triple A: Memphis 5 - Round Rock 4

  • Harrison Bader (CF): 0-5, 3 K
  • Randal Grichuk (LF): 1-5, R, K
  • Luke Voit (DH): 0-5, R, 2 K
  • Carson Kelly (C): 2-4, R, 2 RBI
  • Patrick Wisdom (3B): 0-3, R, 2 K
  • Alex Mejia (SS): 1-4, RBI, 2 K
  • Breyvic Valera (2B): 2-4, R
  • Jack Flaherty (SP): 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
  • Miguel Socolovich (RP): 1 IP, 2 K
  • Josh Lucas (RP): 1 IP, 2 K

The Memphis offense was held to 7 hits, none of which went for extra bases, but they plated 5 runs with a little help from the Round Rock defense...Organizational soldier Alex Mejia is back up in Memphis to back fill the hole that Paul DeJong's promotion left in the Red Birds' infield...Jack Flaherty had the shortest outing of his AAA career, and also had his second straight multi-homer game...Josh Lucas had a breakout of sorts last season in Springfield before stumbling upon being promoted to Memphis. His second AAA campaign has gone much better, he has struck out 40 batters and walked only 7.

Double A: Tulsa 5 - Springfield 2

  • Oscar Mercado (CF): 1-5, R, 2 K, SB
  • Jose Adolis Garcia (RF) 0-3, R, BB, 2 K
  • Anthony Garcia (LF): 0-2, RBI
  • Andrew Knizner (C): 0-4, 2 K
  • Magneuris Sierra (PH): 1-1, 2B
  • Austin Gomber (SP): 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 2 HR

All of the power came from the pitcher's spot in the lineup last night. Austin Gomber hit his first double of the season and Magneuris Sierra collected his 8th in a PH appearance...Sierra's double pushed his Texas League wRC+ up to 137. It's been aided by an absurd BABIP, his "power" has been mostly a result of his speed and he hasn't been walking much at all. But that is probably what a good season from Sierra will look like; an OBP buoyed by a high BABIP and a SLG propped up by his ability to leg out extra bases... Oscar Mercado's Mercado stole his 25th base of the year which leads the Texas League...Gomber was hurt by the long ball again last night, he has been particularly homer prone this season, but that is an occupational hazard in the Texas League. He also had his first walk-free start of the season. It will be interesting to see if that is a sign of him taking a more aggressive approach, and if more home runs are the trade off for fewer walks.

Class A Advanced: Palm Beach 3 - Charlotte 0 (7Innings)

  • Darren Seferina (3B): 1-3, R, BB
  • Tommy Edman (SS): 0-2, BB, K
  • Randy Arozarena (LF): 1-4, R, 2B, BB, K
  • Chris Chinea (1B): 1-4, K
  • Blake Drake (CF): 0-1, 2 BB
  • Andy Young (2B): 1-3, R, 2B
  • Jose Godoy (C) : 1-3
  • Jake Woodford (SP): 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K

Class A Advanced: Charlotte 5 - Palm Beach 0 (7Innings)

  • Darren Seferina (3B): 0-3, 3 K
  • Tommy Edman (SS): 0-3, 2 K
  • Randy Arozarena (LF): 1-3, K
  • Chris Chinea (C): 0-3
  • Blake Drake (CF): 0-3, K
  • Andy Young (2B): 0-3
  • Derian Gonzalez (SP): 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 6 K

Another promotion for Andy Young who at his 4th level of pro ball since being drafted in the 37th round last June. He has been a huge so surprise so far and the organization has promoted him aggressively to an age-appropriate level...Palm Beach was only able to muster 2 hits in the second game...Jake Woodford's peripheral numbers haven't been great, but he has held his own at 2 levels of full-season ball the last two years in his age 19 and 20 seasons. His draft pedigree, broad skill set, and steady if not particularly exciting progress up the ladder kind of remind me of Jack Flaherty.

Class A Short-Season: Williamsport 9 - State College 2

Obviously not an ideal Opening Day for the Spikes. 2016 10th round pick Sam Tewes got the start and took the loss allowing 4 runs over 5 innings. 2013 draftee Ricardo Bautista homered to provide the lone highlight on offense.

Bryce Denton is probably the only name most people will recognize in the Spikes lineup, he is joined by a few names from the bonus pool rounds of last year's draft. There should be quite a bit of roster churn though, especially early. College senior from the 2017 draft will be added to the roster as they sign and there will also likely be a few Johnson City players who force a promotion (looking at you Delvin).

Dominican Summer League: DSL Angels 5 - DSL Cardinals 1
