Corey Littrell joined the Springfield bullpen last week after finishing his 50 game suspension for a drug of abuse. Littrell's suspension came at a particularly bad time for him. He was converted to relief full time last year, and with the big league bullpen struggling and the Memphis shuttle running regularly he could have been in the mix for at least a cameo appearance in St. Louis.
Randy Arozarena has had a huge June so far, ripping 4 homers, 4 doubles and collecting 5 walks in 8 games. The 5 walks are almost half of his season total of 11. He got off to a slow start in his first exposure to the Florida State League and baseball here in the U.S., but after his recent tear he's in the top 10 in the FSL in HR, 2B and SLG. That is extremely impressive for a guy who plays over half of his games in Roger Dean Stadium. He's also swiped 8 bags for good measure.
The Cardinals have quite a few catchers with interesting bats dotting the rosters of Peoria and Palm Beach, so 2015 19th rounder Ryan McCarvel has been finding playing time where he can get it. He’s had a disastrously high strikeout rate in the Midwest League, but he’s shown enough power to actually put up a solid batting line. The power is fun and he does a pretty decent job getting on base, but striking out almost 30% of the time in A ball is a fatal flaw if it goes unfixed…Just last week I was praising Dobzanski’s homer suppressing tendencies and he responded by giving up a homer last night. The results haven’t been great for Dobzanki in full-season ball, and the Cardinals are about to have a couple of rookie league teams that need pitchers. I’m not sure what the next step is for him, see if he figures it out, try him in the bullpen, send him to short-season ball or other.
