Birds:
Nick Petree (A+): 5 IP, 4 H, 6 K, 0 BB
Petree pitched 5 stellar innings in relief of Silfredo Garcia to keep the Palm Beach club in the game. Sadly, as has been the case often this season, the Palm Beach offense came up empty once again.
Landon Beck (SS-A): 5 IP, 2 H, R, 4 K, 0 BB
Beck was the 25th round selection in the 2014 draft out of Anderson University in South Carolina and had a solid season for playoff bound Johnson City last summer. He's a big right hander with a power pitcher profile that may suit him better to the bullpen in the long term.
Edmundo Sosa (R-JC): 2-5, 2 R, 3B, K
Sosa's Johnson City debut started off with a bang, reaching base in his first three plate appearances (a single, fielder's choice, and a leadoff triple to start the 6th inning) and scoring two runs. There's probably not a more exciting up the middle group in the lower minors than what the Cardinals are featuring at Johnson City, which I'll get to in my preview tomorrow.
Bums:
Palm Beach Batsmen (7-31, 2 2B, 4 BB, 7 K, 0 Runs)
Currently the Palm Beach club has three qualified batters hitting below .200 on the season: Carson Kelly (.177), David Washington (.116) and Casey Turgeon (.194). Jake Gronsky pulled himself up to .214 last night with a 1-4 outing or he'd be right around the Mendoza line also. If you're wondering how Alex Reyes has a losing record despite dominating every hitter in the league, here's your answer.
Kyle Barraclough (0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K)
After being pretty much unhittable prior to last night, Barraclough finally proved to be somewhat human, surrendering twice as many runs as he had all season up to that point while recording just a pair of outs. Opposing batsmen are still hitting just .196 off Barraclough even after this debacle, so he's someone to keep an eye on in case of more pitching injuries to the Cardinal bullpen.
Midwest League All Star Game: East 5 - West 0
A number of Class A Peoria Chiefs players participated for the West division All-Stars:
Oscar Mercado: 0-2, K
Luis Perdomo: 1 IP, H, ER, BB, K
Austin Gomber: 1 IP, BB, 2 K
Robby Rowland: 0.1 IP, K
