As an Illinois gal I have been to Sauget a time or two — I have even visited the home of the Gateway Grizzles. Soon fans of the Cardinals might want to follow my lead as it looks like the team will be using GCS Credit Union Ballpark as their alternate site:
#stlcards will use GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, home of the Gateway Grizzlies, as their alternate training site in 2021.— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) March 9, 2021
The alternate site is the training park for up to 28 players on the teams “taxi squad” with the idea that they can easily be called up to the 25-man roster. It is a rule in place in these pandemic times to allow more flexibility for the teams. AAA Memphis coaching staff will be in charge of the alternate site. Per Zachary Silver of MLB.com:
As it stands, the Cardinals plan to treat their alternate training site like an extension of Spring Training — just without the Florida sunshine. Those who inhabit the site will likely make up the bulk of who’s expected to be on the Triple-A roster once the season starts, Mozeliak said.
I do not know if fans will actually get the chance to watch the players in action in Saguet, but if they do get the chance, or just want to catch a Grizzlies game, it really is a nice stadium. Check out some baseball and grab that burger they make using Krispy Kreme donuts if you are feeling really adventurous.
what else is going on in baseball...
what the cardinals are up to...
Alex Reyes is set to pitch in relief today -- and the #Cardinals are mapping out a plan to have Reyes pitch 100 innings this season. That's the target, Mozeliak says in a STL media Zoom call. If all of those come in relief, it's something of a retro role for Reyes.— Derrick S. Goold (@dgoold) March 9, 2021
