The summer of 2004 was a great summer for me. I was eleven, so, most summers were pretty great at that point. I would play outside during the day, drink my chocolate milk in the afternoon and if I was lucky, the Cardinals game would be broadcast on KPLR. I was living the dream.
That summer I watched as the Cardinals won 105 games. I watched Jim Edmonds, Albert Pujols, and Scott Rolen become the MV3. I watched Jason Isringhausen earn 47 saved in got dang 74 appearances.
That’s what happens when the team wins a lot of games though.
Gosh, they won so many games. It was to the point that it was a surprise when they lost. The team rolled into every series with the confidence that they were not just going to win, but they were going to destroy the other team... and then they DID! Then the team traded for Larry Walker. *chef’s kiss* They were unstoppable.
Until they weren’t.
I am not going to try to unpack what the hell happened in the 2004 World Series. The present is already trying enough without reopening those old wounds. Let’s just reflect on what was great. Get your chocolate milk, or you know, drink of choice ready, and let’s take a trip down memory lane.
