On Wednesday afternoon the Cardinals made an acquisition. It was not exactly one we had been keeping our eyes on, but it was an acquisition all the same. The team announcedit had traded minor league outfielder Diowill Burgos to the Miami Marlins in exchange for outfielder Austin Dean:

Dean is a 26-year-old righty that was drafted by the Marlins in 2012. He made his debut in 2018 and in 311 major league plate appearances since has hit for a slash line of .223/.238/.388 for a career 74 wRC+. This is probably not nearly enough data to draw a conclusion from so let’s see what some prospect nerds have to say. Carson Cistulli had this to say of him in an article he wrote while at Fangraphs in 2018:
In particular, Dean’s contact skills have translated well: among batters with 50 or more plate appearances, Dean’s strikeout and swinging-strike rates place in the 91st and 97th percentile. Meanwhile, he’s produced roughly league-average power numbers. While the offensive burden of a corner-outfield role remains high, Dean could probably survive with slightly less power on contact than most given his bat-to-ball skills.
The move is not exactly an exciting one, but the Cardinals do seem to have a nice fourth outfielder to add to their collection. Perhaps this is an indication of more trades coming? Or maybe it means the Cardinals are content with what they have? There is still a lot of offseason left. Let’s see what happens.
