I know we have already discussed the rumors that the Cardinals might be in pursuit of Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado. With time running out in the offseason, the rumors are ramping up, though, so let’s revisit some of what has been said. First let’s start with this quote tweeted by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch because it seems important:
Asked about trade offer/speculations clogging Twitter on Saturday, #Cardinals POBO John Mozeliak tells @Ackerman1120 on KMOX that “90 percent to 95 percent of it is untrue.” He, per usual, declines to discuss a specific trade target. #stlcards #MLB #Rockies

What does that mean? Maybe John Mozeliak is trying to throw everyone off his trail! Or maybe people are just wildly speculating to the point of absurdity. Who knows! Let’s start some rumors!
Jon Morosi of MLB.com has seemingly had the most info regarding the Arenado rumors and even then, it is not much. Over the past few days they seem to indicate a higher level of interest on the part of the Cardinals.

He is the only reporting really stating that, however. Jeff Passan has called a deal “a long shot”.
Quick Nolan Arenado update in yes-and-no form, per sources:
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 14, 2020
- Yes, the Rockies and Cardinals are talking.
- No, the talks haven't gone anywhere.
- No, the exchange of names has not been productive.
- Yes, it's still considered a long shot that Arenado is dealt in the short-term.
So gosh, what does this mean? Who is right, we cannot be sure. What we do know is that the Cardinals tend to keep deals quiet and the are the only team this winter that has not added a player that was previously on a major league roster. An addition is coming at some point, it seems, but whether that is Arenado or someone like Marcell Ozuna remains to be seen.
