Earlier this afternoon it was reported that Bryce Harper has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. By process of elimination we can therefore determine he will not be signing with the Cardinals. It is the last day of February and Harper finally has a home.
The rumors have indicated for awhile the a Harper to Philadelphia agreement might be imminent. On the flip side, nothing ever really implied that the Cardinals and Harper were ever a possible match. Now, I feel confident saying the book on that is closed.
The contract details:
Bryce Harper’s deal with the Philadelphia Phillies includes a no-trade clause, league sources tell ESPN. Combine that with the 13-year, $330 million term, and this much is clear: Bryce Harper is committed to being a Philadelphia Phillie for the rest of his career.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) February 28, 2019
Harper's contract has no deferrals, no opt-outs, and is being described as "front-loaded." Harper did not want opt outs, I'm told. Preferred long-term stability.— Barry Svrluga (@barrysvrluga) February 28, 2019
Harper will very likely be a Philly FOR-EV-ER.
The news of Harper's agreement has infiltrated the visitors clubhouse at Champion Stadium. "Why would you want to play that long?" one Tiger said. "This game sucks."— Anthony Fenech (@anthonyfenech) February 28, 2019
