The Brewers almost put the Cardinals in the trash - A Hunt and Peck

The trashers have become the trashed.

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Remember a month ago. Think back on it now. Ah, simpler times, a month ago. The Cardinals were red hot, heading toward a playoff position, and crushing any team in their way. Fast forward to present time.

‘Tis the Cardinals that have been crushed.

Now, to look at one of the saddest graphs to ever graph:

Data via Fangraphs

The Cardinals are not quite in the trash, yet. There is still a chance, but it requires some help from the San Francisco Giants and/or the Washington Nationals. As of now, the Rockies have a half game lead over the Dodgers for the NL West title. If the Rockies lose to the Phillies this afternoon, they will be tied. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are one game behind the Dodgers and potentially two behind the Rockies, should the Rockies defeat the Phillies. For the Cardinals to make the playoffs outright, they will have to win two more games than the Dodgers or possibly three more than the Rockies.

To summarize:

If the Rockies win this afternoon, the Cardinals can get into the playoffs if:

the Cardinals sweep the Cubs and Dodgers go 1-2 or 0-3
the Cardinals sweep the Cubs and Rockies go 0-3
the Cardinals sweep the Cubs, the Dodgers go 2-1, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals sweep the Cubs, the Rockies go 1-2, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 2-1 and the Dodgers go 0-3
the Cardinals go 2-1, the Dodgers go 1-2, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 2-1 the Rockies go 0-3, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 1-2, the Dodgers go 0-3, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game

If the Rockies lose this afternoon, the Cardinals can get into the playoffs if:

the Cardinals sweep the Cubs and Dodgers go 1-2 or 0-3
the Cardinals sweep the Cubs and Rockies go 1-2 or 0-3
the Cardinals sweep the Cubs, the Dodgers go 2-1, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals sweep the Cubs, the Rockies go 2-1, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 2-1 and the Dodgers go 0-3
the Cardinals go 2-1 and the Rockies go 0-3

the Cardinals go 2-1, the Dodgers go 1-2, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 2-1, the Rockies go 1-2, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 1-2, the Dodgers go 0-3, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game
the Cardinals go 1-2, the Rockies go 0-3, and the Cardinals win the tie-breaker play-in game

Basically the Cardinals best bet is to sweep the Cubs in the Wrigley. The Cardinals should totally do that.
