On this day in 2011 a moth flew into Matt Holliday’s ear - A Hunt and Peck

An unforgettable moment in an unforgettable season.

A lot of weird stuff happened in 2011. The Cardinals were out of the Wild Card by 10 games with 32 left to play and ran down the Atlanta Braves to squeak into the playoffs, going on to win it all in unforgettable fashion. There were a lot of moments leading up to that outcome, though, that sometimes - and rightfully so - get overshadowed by the unbelievable conclusion. David Freese got conked on the head with a pitch. Pete Kozma broke Albert Pujols’ wrist (and then he healed with superhuman speed). Adron Chambers scored on a wild pitch.

A moth flew into Matt Holliday’s ear.

At the time it appeared to be an omen for misfortune and misery, but from then the Cardinals went 23-9. Moth’s are attracted to light. Perhaps it was sign of the good things that were to come, instead.

At any rate, Matt can take solace in the fact that this appears to be a Thing That Happens:
