The fact of the matter is, I adore Carlos Martínez and would hate for the Cardinals to trade him. He is one of the most exciting personalities on the team and, perhaps more importantly, their top pitcher. He is also under an incredibly team-friendly contract due to an extension he signed in 2017 for five-years and $51 million with team options in 2022 and 2023. He is a very valuable player, but if the Cardinals do not see themselves as contenders, perhaps they will consider moving Martínez.
The Yankees match up with the Cardinals very well in regards to Carlos. They have the prospects to offer and have the need for pitching. At almost twenty-seven years old, Carlos is smack-dab in the middle of his career. His value may never be higher.
On the flip side, the Cardinals just made a major shake-up by dismissing long-time manager Mike Matheny. They are four games back of a Wild Card spot. Depending on how well the upcoming five-game series against the Cubs goes, they might be in striking distance for the division. Beyond 2018, the Cardinals farm is strong, some divisional rivals will be weaker. 2019 might be the time to make a push.
This Cubs series will tell us everything. A bad series might be the spell the end of Carlos Martínez’s days wearing the Birds on the Bat.
Gosh, that is so sad. The Cardinals should destroy the Cubs.
