It probably would not matter.
The Cardinals are seven games back of the Brewers right now and as games tick by, the gap gets further and further apart. There is still a chance, though. The Cardinals have trailed by more games with fewer to play before. But if the Brewers acquire Manny Machado... well the odds shrink even smaller.
According to several sources, the Brewers are in the mix to trade for Manny Machado. The proposal, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, is that the Orioles want Corbin Burnes in exchange for the infielder. Burnes made a successful debut out of the Brewers bullpen on July 10. He is MLB.com’s 56th ranked prospect and ranked second in the Brewers system (the Brewers number one prospect is Keston Hiura, who comes in at 30th on MLB.com’s list). For further context, the Cardinals top two prospects, Alex Reyes and Tyler O’Neill, are ranked 16th and 50th.
For the Brewers’ part, they appear to be a bit leery of giving up their top pitching prospect, especially now that he is a major league contributor. According to Rosenthal, they are countering with an offer of AAA outfielder Brett Phillips and AA pitcher Luis Ortiz. Phillips and Ortiz are ranked fourth and fifth on the MLB.com’s prospect ranking for the Brewers.
Machado would certainly make the Brewers better, especially now that he is playing shortstop - an area where the Brewers have gotten little production offensively. Machado to the Brewers would be a huge strike in the battle for the NL Central Division. The Brewers should definitely do it.
But as a fan of the Cardinals, I sure hope they don’t.
