Let’s watch Red Schoendienst hit fungos - A Hunt and Peck

Side note: I miss the funny Cardinals commercials; can those come back?

Most Cardinal fans are probably already aware of the passing of Forever Cardinal, Red Schoendienst. The news of his passing broke during the Cardinals game Wednesday and stlcardinalsfan4 wrote a lovely tribute to Red this morning. Red will be sorely missed.

Perhaps one of my favorite things about Red Schoendienst was his determination. Determined to keep his eye, Red sought other treatment options. Determined to be a ball player, Red taught himself to switch hit so his poor eyesight in his left eye would be less of a burden. Determined to make the Cardinals, Red is said to have slept on bench at the train station the night before tryouts, unable to afford a hotel room. Determined to remain a part of the game he loved, every year, even into his 90s, Red Schoendienst would dress in full uniform, arrive at Spring Training, and hit fungos. This inspired one of my favorite Cardinals commercials ever.

Rest In Peace, Red. We will miss you greatly.
