Carlos Martínez is the coolest teammate ever - A Hunt and Peck

We all make mistakes, but Carlos Martínez will love us despite them.

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

In the bottom of the ninth during Wednesday night’s game, the Cardinals led six runs to none against the Milwaukee Brewers. Carlos Martinez had pitched a gem so far, blanking the Brewers by striking out ten, walking two, hitting one batter, and allowing only four hits. With one out in the ninth and a runner on first, Martínez was nearing 120 pitches and had a shutout on the line. On his 114th pitch of the game, Carlos coaxed a lazy groundball to the third baseman Yairo Munoz, who had just came in the game the half inning earlier to spell Matt Carpenter and shore up the defense. It was a sure double player ball. And, well...

Muñoz botched it :(

That would be it for Carlos. The team went on to preserve the shutout, but not with Martínez on the mound.

Now some pitchers might have gotten upset with their teammate about this. One might recall a certain beloved, but intense pitcher yelling an almost endearingly scatterbrained (it was later revealed he has Attention Deficit Disorder)*, slick-fielding shortstop in the tunnel of the dugout after he had to wait for him to find his glove.

But not Carlos. Because Carlos Martínez is awesome. When he left the game, he made a it a special point to high-five Muñoz and presumably tell him something along the lines of “keep your head up”.

I meant to make a gif to insert here, but I uhhh... was unsuccessful:

Luckily for me, @cardinalsgifs and the wonderful VEB commenter VHS took pity on me and helped me out. So now here is not one, but two gifs for your enjoyment!

He also posted a photo of them together after the game.

Because at the end of the day, it is a game and the Cardinals won. Now on to the next!
