Earlier we have explored the rumor that the Arizona Diamondbacks might be interested in trading their All Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. It was, of course, just a rumor and the Cardinals were not even really linked to it at the time, it was just a cute little thought to entertain us in this cold, dreary time. In the past few days, however, this cute little thought grew into an Actual Thing™. The rumor had legs, as they say, and it even expanded to include another player: Zack Greinke.
But then Zack Greinke came along and kicked them out from under it.
From @Ken_Rosenthal: “Sources say the Cards have kicked around the idea of acquiring Goldschmidt and Greinke in the same deal, but.... St. Louis is one of the clubs on Greinke’s 15-team no-trade list” https://t.co/NjHbxQNB59— Mark Saxon (@markasaxon) November 26, 2018
According to Rosenthal, Greinke, taking full advantage of the No Trade Clause in his contract, had created list of fifteen teams to which he will not accept a trade. The St. Louis Cardinals are one of them. Now, the Cardinals may still be trying to work around that. Players have certainly changed their minds before and this could just be a pull for more leverage from Greinke. Either way, a potential deal for both players became a bit trickier.
So yeah, what a buzzkill.
