The quickest of looks at the Rule 5 Draft - A Hunt and Peck

This year’s Rule 5 Draft will take place December 13. This draft is different from the MLB Draft that occurs in June - the one in which most of us are more familiar. The main difference between the Rule 5 Draft and the Amateur Draft (which in researching this I found was called the Rule 4 Draft) is that the Rule 5 Draft does not involve, well, amateurs such as high school and college-level players. It is essentially a draft that allows other teams to pluck players from another team’s minor league system. Fangraphs has a great primer on the specifics of how the Rule 5 Draft works.

According to Jen Langosch of MLB.com, the Cardinals have six top thirty prospects eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft:

Ryan Helsey - Right-Handed Pitcher
Max Schrock - Second Baseman
Genesis Cabrera - Left-handed Pitcher
Junior Fernandez - Right-Handed Pitcher
Ramon Urias - Infielder
Wadye Ynfante - Outfielder

These players, along with with around fifty more, could be drafted by another team this December should the Cardinals chose to leave them unprotected. Now we wait.
