A few months back it was rumored that Rick Ankiel might be making a return to pitching. We were all pretty excited here at Viva El Birdos. We even considered his return to the Cardinals. Ben Godar wrote about it in his post appropriately titled If Rick Ankiel is going to pitch again, it must be with the Cardinals. The Cardinals and Rick Ankiel have a chance for a true storybook ending. According Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, both sides are looking into making it happen:

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak has already had at least one conversation with former Cardinals pitcher and outfielder Rick Ankiel about his plans to come out of retirement and pursue a job as a reliever. In the coming weeks, Mozeliak intends to “touch base” and determine if common interest exists for a reunion.

Ankiel is currently preparing for winter ball to see if he could have a shot at a Major League Spring Training. The Cardinals are looking for a lefty-reliever and they might give Rick Ankiel a shot at it.
