When the Cardinals signed Jhonny Peralta in 2014 to a four-year, $53 million contract, it was with the expectation that the then thirty-two year old would be worth more than his salary to begin the contract, and less as he entered his decline. And basically that has happened. Peralta put up the best year of his career with 5.3 fWAR, and has dropped off to below replacement value in 2017 after losing much of 2016 to injury. The decline has been so severe, however there is talk of designating the shortstop for assignment. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch:
More tinkering is likely, though Peralta’s role in it is unclear. The veteran is in the final year of his four-year, $53 million deal with the Cardinals, and he has limited no-trade protection. He provided the Cardinals a list of 10 teams to which he’ll accept a trade.
The Cardinals will need to decide if they want to part ways with their former All Star shortstop and soon.
