In celebration of one hundred years of the National Hockey League’s existence (or something like that), the NHL unveiled its top one hundred players list. Keeping with this theme, John and I, along with Drew Silva from Rotoworld, discussed the top twenty Cardinals in episode sixty-nine of the Viva El Birdos Podcast. My list looked something like this:
- Stan Musial
- Bob Gibson
- Albert Pujols
- Rogers Hornsby
- Ozzie Smith
- Ken Boyer
- Ted Simmons
- Enos Slaughter
- Jim Edmonds
- Lou Brock
- Ray Lankford
- Joe Medwick
- Adam Wainwright
- Johnny Mize
- Curt Flood
- Red Schoendienst
- Yadier Molina
- Frankie Frisch
- Dizzy Dean
- Chris Carpenter
- *Scott Rolen
The obvious way to do this is to go to the Fangraphs leader board and choose the top twenty from there. I wanted to consider soft factors with my list, though. Red technically falls outside the top twenty, but I dare you to keep that man off your All Time Cardinals list. Yadi might be a controversial inclusion, but there is something to be said for being the face of the Cardinals during one of the team’s most successful eras. And Chris [redacted] Carpenter will always hold a special place in my heart.
So what say you? Who makes your top Cardinals list?
*Scott Rolen was probably the best or second best third baseman to play for the Cardinals, in addition to being one of my favorite players growing up, and it is painful to leave him off the list *cries
