It is the holiday season and for baseball fans that means something very fun - the annual release of Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections! The Cardinals’ projections are finally out.
The team is deep - that is the first thing to stand out. While there is no obvious superstar, there is also no starter - pitcher or position player - that projects under 2 wins above replacement, which is considered an average player. The newest Cardinals acquisition, Marcell Ozuna, projects to be the team’s best player with a comp listed as Matt Holliday. What this means is Holliday’s age-24, 25, and 26 (shoutout to infamous internet commenter stlcardinalsfang for helping me to understand this!) seasons are the closest to Ozuna’s age-24, 25, and 26 seasons...
