Adam Wainwright receives Hutch Award

Wainwright is the fifty-first recipient of the Hutch Award, given to him for his outstanding community service.

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Adam Wainwright has become the fifty-first recipient of the Hutch Award, an award given annually to one Major League Baseball player in recognition of outstanding community service. The award is named in honor of the late Fred Hutchinson, a former major leaguer and manager who died of cancer at the young age of forty-five and is presented by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center based in Seattle.

Wainwright on receiving the award per Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

"What this award stands for means so much more to me than any achievement on the ball field could ever mean to me...

"I've been tremendously blessed with talent and fortune. What an incredible waste of life it would be if I didn't give back. To know that there are people who actually think that the work my wife and I are doing around the globe makes a difference is truly special," Wainwright said. "And it's great to get an award for something we do in the community. But that's not why we do it."
