Where should Matt Carpenter bat? - A Hunt and Peck

Will Carpenter find himself leading off again this season?

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

For his past three full seasons as a starter Matt Carpenter has consistently been one of the Cardinals top hitters. Among qualified hitters, he has led the team in wRC+ in 2015 with 146, came in third in 2014 to Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta with a wRC+ of 117, and was second only to Holliday in 2013 at 146 weighted runs created (plus). While Carpenter has continued to be an exceptional hitter over the years, the results have been varied. Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch quotes:

"Looking back," said Carpenter the other day, "I have had three full seasons as a starter, and I feel like I have been different each year. I feel like there are pieces of each season I'd like to morph into one complete year. If I had a goal for 2016, that would be what it would be a every year that I've had here in St. Louis, maybe have bits and pieces of that.

If Carp's newfound power holds up along with his patient batting eye and good contact skills, he will continue to be a dangerous presence in the Cardinal line-up, more so than ever before.
