Daily Farm Report - 7/1/13

A daily recap of the minor league players in the Cardinals' farm system.

Memphis 2, Iowa 4

  • Thomas Pham was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk.
  • Brock Peterson was 2-for-4.
  • Tyler Lyons is clearly on a mission to show that he's fixed whatever was ailing him in the majors. He struck out 9 in 7 innings of shutout baseball. Lyons allowed 2 hits and 2 walks needing just 89 pitches. The Cardinals have so many high end pitching prospects that it's hard to remember sometimes how valuable an innings eater can be and what they look like in the minors. Lyons has the potential to be that kind of pitcher.
  • Fernando Salas coughed up 4 runs (1 earned) while recording just 2 outs. He allowed 2 hits.
  • The ending to the game was odd leading to an unusual box score quirk. Sam Freeman gets credited with 2 strikeouts but only recording 0.1 innings of work. He allowed both inherited runners from Salas to score.

Springfield 1, San Antonio 3

  • Springfield was held to just 2 hits. Xavier Scruggs made his hit count with a solo home run, his 20th of the season. It's interesting that Scruggs is putting up big power numbers in Springfield as a right handed hitter. We're used to lefties getting an artificial power burst but this doesn't appear to be the case with Scruggs.
  • Richard Castillo struck out 5 in 8 innings of work. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits.
  • Lee Stoppleman lost in walk off fashion allowing 2 run home run to first baseman Johan Limonta.

Peoria 3, Cedar Rapids 6

State College 7, Williamsport 5

  • Cesar Valera, SS, went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a walk.
  • Luke Voit, 1B, went 3-for-3 with a double.
  • Bruce Caldwell, 2B, was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks.
  • Josh Lucas struck out 4 in 3.2 innings of work. He allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk.
  • Jeff Rauh struck out 2 in a perfect 9th.

Johnson City 1, Princeton 2

  • Ronnierd Garcia, 1B, was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Blake McKnight pitched 6 solid innings allowing 5 hits for 1 run. He struck out 2.
  • Will Anderson pitched the 7th and 8th allowing a solo home run among 2 hits while striking out 1.
