Round 5, Pick 155: Ian McKinney, LHP

The Cardinals dip back into the High School arms pile for their 5th round pick and select High School lefthander, Ian McKinney out of William R Boone HS (FL).

Ian McKinney, LHP

William R Boone HS (FL)

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 185lbs

DOB: 11/18/94

MLB's draft tracker:

McKinney has been a regular on the showcase circuit and has a track record of performing well in big events. But he is listed at just 5-foot-11, 165 pounds, and offers limited projection, leading some to speculate he will end up in the bullpen. McKinney throws his fastball around 90 mph, often sitting in the upper-80s. His slider is his best offspeed pitch and he also throws a changeup and curveball. McKinney has a good feel for pitching and has solid command. His delivery is clean and repeatable. McKinney is committed to Central Florida.

From the Area Code Games on College Baseball Daily:

- Ian McKinney, RHP, Nationals. After the meltdown from Nats starter Cheyne Bickford, Ian Mac came in, kept a cool head and was very efficient. McKinney issued a leadoff walk, then retired the next six batters in a row, three by strikeout. Though only about 5’10″ and 165 or so, he pitches like he’s 6’5″ and has no fear. His fastball was upper 80s and had the Brewers flailing at his off-speed stuff.

At his Perfect Game profile you can see videos of him throwing at the National Showcase.
