VEB Podcast: Talking ZiPS, Projected Win Totals, & Your Questions

The VEB writing team talks ZiPS projections, our first look at a projected win total for 2024, and takes questions from the site!

Good morning, Viva El Birdos!

The writing team was back this week for another episode of the VEB podcast. At the time of our recording, we still didn’t have any news on a reliever. No surprise starters were acquired in trade. The only new info on the docket on Thursday night was Fangraphs’ release of their Cardinals 2024 ZiPS projections. I covered that on the site right here. The rest of the writing team were able to weigh in through the podcast. They have some interesting takes and what the projections mean for the club’s offense, pitching staff, and minor league depth.

ZiPS also had our first computer-aided projected win total for the upcoming season: 85-90 wins. We provide our own initial projections based on Dan Szymborski’s estimates. The writing team was a little split here. We all seemed to agree that 90 wins seemed like a pretty unlikely ceiling. Where we differed was the midpoint and floor of this club. You’ll have to listen to see where we all landed.

Thanks again for asking great questions! Sorry that we weren’t able to get to all of them. I divided the questions into categories and we tried to hit as many of them as we could. Most likely your question was answered at some point in the podcast, even if we didn’t cite you specifically. Several questions we took up in detail in previous episodes, which you can find on the Viva El Birdos YouTube page -

If you are interested in some of the inner workings of Viva El Birdos, how our writing team works, and some funny stories about articles and fan/player interactions, stick around for the final 15 minutes.

As always, you can watch or listen to the podcast right here on the site. Or take it with you in downloadable audio or video formats. If you haven’t already, please like our videos and subscribe to our channel on YouTube and through your favorite podcast outlet. We don’t make any money off the podcast, but it would bring more attention and traffic to the site, which helps us add more writers and provide you with more content! It’s a symbiotic relationship here. You read, listen, watch. We give you things to read, listen and watch!
