Weeks full of rumors, speculation, and wait has come down to this. The 2021 MLB trade deadline is today at 3:00 PM Central Time, and it’ll be hard to top the big names we’ve seen moved in past couple days leading up to this.
Yesterday (Thursday) alone we saw..
- The Cubs sent first baseman Anthony Rizzo and cash to the Yankees for a pair of prospects; it’s the second left-handed bat the Yankees have added this week, as Rizzo joins Joey Gallo has the newest (Yankee) pinstripe wearer. The Cubs also sent lefty reliever Ryan Tepera to the White Sox, and the South Siders picked up Ceaser Hernandez from the Indians in a separate deal.
- The Nationals made a flurry of moves; Kyle Schwarber to the Red Sox, Daniel Hudson to the Padres, Brad Hand to the Blue Jays, and — the biggest blockbuster of them all — Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Dodgers.
- The Dodgers also traded a PTBNL to the Royals for Danny Duffy.
These moves came a day after we saw the Marlins acquire Jesus Luzardo from the Athletics for Starling Marte, and the Brewers land Eduardo Escobar from the Diamondbacks.
Although the Cardinals haven’t been heard in any of the chatter recently, it’s possible some more NL Central pieces will fall before this afternoon. The Cubs were rumored to be shopping Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, along with the departed Rizzo.
The Cardinals, still at .500 (51-51) are back home tonight and will take on the Twins (43-60) this weekend. Wade LeBlanc will start for St. Louis, opposite of Jose Berrios (assuming he isn’t dealt...), at 7:15 PM Central time.
