Recapping Wednesday’s minor league action

Midland RockHounds 5, Springfield Cardinals 4

Angel Rondon (SP) - 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Jose Martinez (3B) - 3-5, 2B

Johan Mieses (RF) - 2-4, HR, 2 RBI

Zach Kirtley (1B) - 1-4, HR, RBI, K

Springfield jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Johan Mieses singled on a 3-1 count to score Jose Martinez. The lead was short lived, however, as starter Angel Rondon allowed a two-run homer in the bottom of the second and followed up by allowing an RBI single. The second inning was the only real hiccup in an otherwise strong outing for Rondon.

Fast forward to the sixth, and Springfield trailed Midland 4-2. The Cardinals closed the gap with a pair of home runs from outfielder Johan Mieses and first baseman Zach Kirtley. The longballs were Mieses’s and Kirtley’s eighth and second in AA this year, respectively.

The 4-4 tie held into the ninth inning. Springfield failed to gain the advantage in the top of the frame, going down 1-2-3 with a fly out, a strikeout, and a groundout. Kodi Whitley, after recording two outs to close the eighth, toed the rubber for Springfield in the bottom of the inning. Whitley got into trouble quickly, allowing two singles in just four pitches. After a force out at third, the runners advanced to scoring position on a groundout to first. The winning run scored with two outs via a Rayder Ascanio fielding error.

Springfield drops to 30-42 after the loss.

Pulaski Yankees 5 @ Johnson City Cardinals 1

Jose Moreno (SP) - 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Diomedes Del Rio (LF) - 1-2, 3B, K

Mateo Gil (SS) - 1-2, RBI

Johnson City Cardinals 3, Pulaski Yankees 1

Francisco Justo (SP) - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Walker Robbins (RP) - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Liam Sabino (3B) - 1-3, 3B

Jhon Torres (CF) - 1-3, 2B, RBI

Wednesday was opening day for the rookie-league Johnson City squad. It’s an interesting roster again this year, featuring many of last years younger draftees as well as Jhon Torres and Malcom Nunez after a brief stint at Peoria. Not much, if anything at all, can be gleaned from the first two box scores of the year. There was, however, an interesting development: Walker Robbins appears to have transitioned to the mound. The big-bodied slugger has failed to make any impact with the bat since being selected in the fifth round of the 2016 Draft, banishing him to near obscurity in the Cardinals prospectverse. He was a two-way prospect coming out of high school, with a low-90’s fastball and a promising yet very raw slider from the left side, so the switch was likely coming sooner rather than later.

Johnson City is 1-1 to start the year. They take on Pulaski again tonight at 5:30pm CDT.
