Only two games occurred in the Cardinals system Tuesday with Springfield having the day off and Peoria’s game getting postponed. The two teams, Palm Beach and Memphis, competed in two very different ways. The Redbirds struggled to score runs, Palm Beach certainly did not.
New Orleans Baby Cakes 3, Memphis Redbirds 1
Adolis Garcia: 2-4
Rangel Ravelo: 2-4
Daniel Ponce de Leon: 6 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks
Ryan Helsley: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H
Memphis had eight hits but struggled to string any together to create some runs. Of the eight hits, a Drew Robinson double served as the only extra base hit.
New Orleans scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and never looked back.
Daniel Ponce de Leon (2-1) put in a quality start with six innings and three runs, four hits and two walks tagged to him. He struck out five.
Ryan Helsley was very good out of the bullpen, only giving up one hit in two innings.
Memphis falls to 13-12 and has dropped the first two to New Orleans. Game 3 of 4 is at 6:30 Wednesday.
Palm Beach Cardinals 9 at St. Lucie Mets 1
Justin Toerner: 2-4, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB
Zach Kirtley: 3-5, 2B
Nick Plummer: 3-5
Jose Martinez: 2-4, 2 RBI, BB
Nick Dunn: 2-5, RBI
Yariel Gonzalez: 2-5, RBI
Johan Oviedo: 6 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 Ks
Palm Beach’s offense was superb as six players had multi-hit games in a romping of St. Lucie.
The Cardinals scored three runs in both the second and eighth inning. They succeeded by playing really good small ball, only three of 16 hits were extra base hits.
The pitching staff was just as good Tuesday.
Johan Oviedo (5-0) went six innings and gave up one run, six hits, three walks and struck out seven. Patrick Dayton, Bryan Dobzanski and Ben Yokley each pitched scoreless innings.
Palm Beach moves to 17-8. Game 2 of 3 at St. Lucie is Wednesday at 5:30.
