Cardinal Surprises

The biggest surprise to me is the addition of Ponce de Leon. While well qualified to serve as a long reliever, his only being used twice since making a spot start in the September 1st doubleheader made me think Shildt didn’t have him in his plans. I did not believe that Shildt would pull the trigger in leaving John Gant off of the roster, despite it being the right move with his struggles with walks. Junior Fernandez and his 50% HR/FB rate were left off, and his 2 rough outings appeared to sink his chances. With Rangel Ravelo garnering a significant portion of the pinch-hitting opportunities lately, I was mildly surprised that Shildt left him off, but Randy Arozarena provides the club with better speed and defense.
