VEB Fantasy League: Midseason Update #4

The one where my VEB superiors gain ground in the standings

Alex Reyes’ season-ending lat injury was a blow to both Josey’s fantasy team and favorite MLB team.

After soaring in the standings from 12th place to...11th place, our own lil_scooter93 posted a comment on the second update article containing the rallying cry for her fantasy baseball squadron, so eloquently named “the lil scooters”.

the lil scooters will rally around wade davis and we will play fantasy baseball

As for the validity of this mantra, the lil scooters are indeed playing fantasy baseball while Wade Davis has tallied more saves (20) than everybody but Edwin Díaz. So, is Heather’s unparalleled pitching staff (pictured below) on pace to lead her to the promised land?

For those unacquainted with this series, 12 VEB staffers and readers compete in a 5x5 rotisserie league. The team that hits the most home runs receives 12 fantasy points towards their ranking in the standings, the team with the second most homers garners 11 points, and so on for each of the 10 statistical categories at play.

  • All participating VEB staff members are now in the top ten!
  • A pretty distinct top tier of championship contenders has emerged among the top four, although there is still plenty of season left for one of the mid-ranked teams to make a leap in the standings. Each of us top four teams have a clear weakness. VEB user jpb3215 finds himself in dead last in the saves department, Salti Cracker is in the bottom half of the league in stolen bases, Bustacard has especially struggled with the rate stats–especially batting average and ERA–while my kryptonite has been the pitching rate stats of ERA of WHIP.
  • This shouldn’t come as any surprise given the scoring format in which there are five offensive stats and five pitching stats equally scored, but balanced roster construction has been the early to (early) success in this league.

Here are the biggest risers and fallers in the standings since the last update from seven weeks ago.

As of this writing, all but one club has somebody on the real life disabled list–I for one call #ScooterDevilMagic–but each fantasy roster allows for a maximum of two DL slots, meaning that some teams are currently playing shorthanded. John Fleming has the most DL-stricken players, carrying six of the 31 owned in the league.

  • Abominable Bowman: Noah Syndergaard
  • Big City Bat Flips: Rhys Hoskins, Elvis Andrus, Andrelton Simmons
  • Bob LOB Law: Josh Donaldson, Wil Myers, Chris Archer, Kenta Maeda
  • Da Bustas: Franchy Cordero, Hyun-Jin Ryu
  • ebo: Mookie Betts, Dinelson Lamet
  • Hakuna Moncada: Yu Darvish, Andrew Miller, Rich Hill
  • Howl’s Owls: Paul DeJong
  • Josey’s Team: David Dahl, A.J. Pollock, Alex Reyes
  • Rolen Dirty: Yoenis Céspedes, Zach Britton
  • the lil scooters: None
  • The Nye Mets: Brandon Belt, Ronald Acuña Jr., Brian McCann, Greg Holland, Adam Ottavino, Johnny Cueto
  • Wacha This Way: Adam Eaton, Daniel Murphy, Clayton Kershaw, Robbie Ray

Have a great Friday, everybody.
