Coming off a win in the series finale at Citi Field against the Mets, the Cardinals will look to keep that momentum alive as they open a series in Milwaukee against the Brewers.
In their home opener, the Brewers will send Zach Davies to the mound opposite Miles Mikolas at 1:10 PM Central time. If you are wanting to ‘participate’ in the team’s festivities, you should tune in to the action around 12:30. Across 33 starts for Milwaukee last year, Davies went 17-9 with a 3.90 ERA in 191 1⁄3 innings. Batters did hit .275 off of him, but Davies enjoyed a 74.2 left on-base percentage. Mikolas will be making his regular-season debut for the Cardinals after spending the 2015-17 seasons in Japan.
The middle game in the series will feature a mound match-up of Chase Anderson and Jack Flaherty and be the Cardinals’ first evening game of the season; first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM. Anderson started the first game of the season for the Brewers and logged six scoreless innings against the Padres. Anderson surrendered one hit and whiffed six batters. Flaherty is starting in place of Adam Wainwright, who is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Flaherty most recently pitched in Montreal, when the Cardinals played an exhibition series with the Blue Jays.
Wednesday is the final game of the series and Jhoulys Chacin will toe the rubber against Carlos Martinez. Chacin gave up four runs over 3 1⁄3 frames against the Padres on Friday, surrendering two home runs, walking two batters, and hitting a batter. Martinez started for St. Louis on Opening Day against the Mets, when he allowed five runs (four earned) in 4 1⁄3 innings. Martinez walked six and struck out five.
Notes:
- Relief pitcher Greg Holland is expected to join the Cardinals within the next 10 days.
