2018 VEB Projections Results: Carlos Martinez

How does the internet believe the Cardinals’ top starter will fare in 2018?

Today, the VEB Community Projections for Carlos Martinez are released.

In 2017 - his third year as a full-time starter, Martinez led the Cardinals with 205 innings pitched across 30 games and starts. Martinez whiffed 217 batters and walked 71, leading to 9.53 K/9 and 3.12 BB/9 rates.

Martinez maintained a 3.64 ERA and 3.91 FIP, holding batters to a collective .232 batting average. Martinez fell victim to the long ball frequently, with 27 hit against him last year; for comparison, batters combined for 15 home runs in 31 games in 2016. Nonetheless, Martinez struck out over 40 more batters in 2017 than 2016, when he punched out 174 batters in 195 1⁄3 frames.
