Trading for a future asset.

I just want to know what you guys think.

What kind of prospect could the Cardinals get in return for a package of Jose Martinez and Carson Kelly? I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the Astros. They have a window of contention, some wiggle room around the luxury cap, and their team is pretty well set for the next few years. Set, that is, unless you consider the only two roster holes they have right now. Can you guess which positions those are? Yup. Catcher and DH. They have zero of either on the roster, unless you count Max Stassi and Chris Herrman. And you probably shouldn’t count Max Stassi and Chris Herrman. It seems like an ideal fit. Getting two incredibly cheap, controlled options at their only two real positions of need should only enhance their chances over the next 4-5 years. The only question is what is the actual value of a Martinez/Kelly package? Is that enough to bring back a Kyle Tucker or Forrest Whitley? Maybe Alvarez? I really don’t know. But after those three, their system really loses some shine. I don’t like the idea of getting rid of good current assets for anything less than a top flight prospect. But I also don’t like the idea of having two good players losing value to the bench.

What are your thoughts?
