Notes on Trosclair, Gomber, and Diaz

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals-Workouts Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Most notable performances over the last week:

Player of the Week: Peoria Chiefs first baseman Stefan Trosclair

With many greater-known names playing above him, Trosclair is quietly piecing together a superb offensive season with the Chiefs. Slashing .280/.387/.441 in 89 games on the year, Trosclair had eight hits in 21 at-bats over the last week, batting in six, scoring five runs, and drawing a pair of walks. Trosclair hit for the cycle on August 4.

Pitcher of the Week: Springfield Cardinals starting pitcher Austin Gomber

The Naturals are sick of seeing Gomber, who shut them down twice over the last week. In his first start on July 30, Gomber whiffed five and walked one while allowing one run on three hits over seven innings. Then, on August 3, Gomber held the Naturals scoreless through seven frames, whiffing as many. With two wins, Gomber is now 6-7 for Springfield this year with a 4.00 earned run average and 103:40 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 110 23 innings - 21 starts.

Player to Watch: Memphis Redbirds shortstop Aledmys Diaz

With Paul DeJong settled in the big-league shortstop role for the foreseeable future, Diaz will likely continue to get his work in in Memphis. After a rough stretch, Diaz went 7-for-21 over the last week of games with a double, four runs scored, and five runs batted in.
