Cardinals Farm Journal: Week of 8/20-26

Voit, Valera, Gomber, and Chinea notes

Minor League Baseball: Nashville Sounds at Memphis Redbirds Yalonda M. James-USA TODAY Sports

With Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko landing on the disabled list prior to Sunday’s game, the team recalled first baseman Luke Voit from the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. Gyorko suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday’s game. No timetable has been publicly established for his return.

Voit went 6-for-14 since returning to the Redbirds less than a week ago with a home run.

Player of the Week: Memphis Redbirds infielder Breyvic Valera

Valera had a solid week at the dish for the Redbirds, going 8-for-25 with two doubles, two homers, three runs batted in, and four runs scored. In 110 games on the season, Valera is slashing .322/.375/.455 with 34 extra-base hits, including 22 doubles, five triples, and seven long balls.

Pitcher of the Week: Springfield Cardinals starter Austin Gomber

Gomber is becoming a regular in these quick farm overlooks, and it’s not without good reason. The lefty continued his excellent August with two more starts over the week, adding up to 13 23 innings with three earned runs allowed. In his start on Saturday against the Tulsa Drillers, Gomber twirled seven innings, including six with no hits allowed. Gomber whiffed nine.

Player to Watch: Palm Beach infielder Chris Chinea

Chinea has had a decent year with Palm Beach, including a 7-for-17 stretch with a double and three runs scored over the last week. In 117 games this year, Chinea has 23 two-baggers with 45 runs scored.
