Daily Farm Report: Breyvic Valera Homers Again

Mike O’Reilly Strikes Out 7

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals-Media Day Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Triple A: New Orleans 8 - Memphis 3

  • Breyvic Valera (LF): 1-5, R, HR, RBI
  • Nick Martini (CF): 1-4, K
  • Patrick Wisdom (3B): 0-4, 2 K
  • Aledmys Diaz (SS): 0-4, 2 K
  • Tyler O’Neill (RF): 0-4, K
  • Harrison Bader (PH): 1-1
  • Luke Voit (PH): 0-1
  • Kevin Herget (SP): 4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR
  • Mark Montgomery (RP): 1 IP, 1 H

Breyvic Valera's home run last night was his 7th of the season. Which is more than he had over his 2,500+ at bat professional career coming into the year. I fear that Breyvic may no longer be the Zero True Outcomes hero baseball needs...Welcome back to the DFR, Luke Voit...Kevin Herget had been a reliever for almost his entire professional career, but was pressed into service as a starter in Memphis as trades and the needs of the big club thinned out the Redbirds' rotation. The results haven't been great, but he's likely just a placeholder for now. He'll likely be a reliever on the cusp of the majors again to start next season.

Double A: Springfield 7 - Northwest Arkansas 3

  • Magneuris Sierra (LF): 0-4, R, BB
  • Oscar Mercado (CF): 1-4, R, RBI, 2 K
  • Darren Seferina (3B): 2-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K, SB
  • Jose Adolis Garcia (RF): 2-5, 2 R, RBI, SB
  • Eliezer Alvarez (2B): 0-5
  • Andrew Knizner (C): 0-4, R, K
  • Tommy Edman (SS): 1-4, 2 K
  • Ryan Helsley (SP): 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 HR

After having a forgettable season in Palm Beach last year, Darren Seferina is back to doing his thing and has seemed to get his career back on track. His thing in this case is providing value via a throwback offensive profile; lots of walks, tons of doubles and triples, and the occasional stolen base...This has been a lost season for Eliezer Alvarez, which is a disappointment coming on the heels of his breakout last year. He was already off to a slow start when he suffered a high-ankle sprain in May and he just hasn't been able to get things going since then. The good news is he'll still only be 23 next year, and will hopefully start next season healthy and with half of his at-bats in Hammons Field...Ryan Helsley's peripherals are quite a bit higher than his 1.93 ERA, but he's also striking over 30% of the batters he faces in the Texas League. The walks are a little worrisome, but they may be the result of working in his off speed pitches. At this point it looks like the fastball may be enough to get him to the majors, hopefully either the secondary stuff comes around and he sticks as a starter, or the walks go away if he scraps a couple of pitches when he moves to the bullpen.

Class A Advanced: Palm Beach 5 - Jupiter 2

  • Jose Martinez (SS): 0-5, 2 K
  • Casey Grayson (1B): 0-4, R
  • Chris Chinea (DH): 4-5, R, RBI
  • Andy Young (2B): 1-3, R, RBI, BB, K
  • Jeremy Martinez (SS): 1-4, K
  • Mike O’Reilly (SP): 6 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K
  • Ian McKinney (RP): 1 IP, 1 K
  • Connor Jones (RP): 1 IP, 2 K

Palm Beach managed to plate 5 runs and win a game in which they struck out 11 times and didn’t have an XBH...Andy Young continues to keep his head above water in the Florida State League...Meanwhile Jeremy Martinez’s nightmare season continues. The plate discipline he displayed last year remains intact, but he has been unable to square up pitching at this level...Mike O’Reilly’s sub-4% walk rate has survived the jump to high A, even if the gaudy strikeout numbers from Peoria have not.

Class A: Wisconsin 8 - Peoria 4

  • Dylan Carlson (CF): 0-4, BB, 2 K
  • Kramer Robertson (SS): 0-5, R, K
  • Brian O’Keefe (DH): 2-4, 2 R
  • Ryan McCarvel (C): 2-3, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K
  • Juan Yepez (3B): 1-4, K
  • Nick Plummer (LF): 2-4, K
  • Austin Warner (SP): 4 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Ronnie Williams (RP): 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 K, HR

The strange, Two True Outcome journeys of Dylan Carlson and Nick Plummer continue; they both have very high walk and strikeout numbers, but none of the power to go with it...Most of Ronnie Williams’ missing strikeouts have reappeared now that he is in the bullpen, but the walks that weighed him down as a starter have not disappeared.

Class A Short-Season: State College 5 - West Virginia 4

  • Wood Myers (SS): 2-4
  • Yariel Gonzalez (3B): 1-3, 2B, RBI
  • Josh Lopez (C): 1-3, BB, K
  • Bryce Denton (LF): 0-3, R
  • Brandon Benson (CF): 2-4, 2 R
  • Jonathon Mulford (SP): 5.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

Rookie: Johnson City 4 - Elizabethton 3

  • Irving Lopez (2B): 2-4, R, BB
  • Julio Rodriguez (C): 1-4, RBI, 2 K
  • Imeldo Diaz (SS): 2-4, R, HR, 2 RBI
  • Walker Robbins (LF): 0-4, 2 K
  • Evan Guillory (SP): 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Rookie: GCL Mets 7 - GCL Cardinals 5

Rookie: DSL Cardinals 6 - DSL Twins 2
