-With 6 23 innings of two-run ball on Sunday against the Hooks, Springfield left-hander Austin Gomber improved to 9-7 on the season and continued an impressive month. The two runs - which came on a two-run homer - were the first earned runs surrendered by Gomber this month. Gomber owns a 0.68 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 26 23 August innings.

-Springfield designated hitter Eliezer Alvarez enjoyed a six-RBI day on Saturday in the Cardinals’ 12-5 win over the Hooks. Alvarez had three hits in four at-bats, including two doubles.

-Memphis starter Dakota Hudson did some work with the bat on Sunday, plating a pair of runs on a double in his only at-bat. Hudson recorded 3 13 scoreless before being removed in the Redbirds’ eventual 6-5 loss to the Baby Cakes.

-Redbirds third baseman Patrick Wisdom continues to shatter his previous career high in home runs with his 27th and 28th of the season over the weekend. His previous season high: 15, set between Peoria and Palm Beach in 2013.

Here’s number 28:

-Palm Beach enjoyed two solid pitching performances over the weekend, the first coming from Jake Woodford on Friday. Woodford allowed one run on four hits in eight innings to the Marauders, resulting in his seventh win of the season.

-On Saturday, Ramon Santos followed with six scoreless innings against the Marauders and picked up his fourth win in seventh decisions this year.

-Springfield outfielder Jose Adolis Garcia had a huge weekend in the batter’s box, going 8-for-11 with with four doubles, a homer, five RBIs, and seven runs scored. Three of the doubles came in Sunday’s series finale with the Hooks.

-Surprise: Stefan Trosclair had another big weekend for the Chiefs, this time coming through with a grand slam on Saturday against the LumberKings. Peoria ultimately fell in the ballgame, 7-6.

-Defense was shining in Springfield this weekend, with infielder Jacob Wilson and outfielder Magneuris Sierra flashing their leather. Sierra’s catch came on Thursday, but it’s worthy of some praise.
