Weekend Farm Report: Dakota Hudson makes Triple-A debut, Tyler O’Neill goes yard, Chris Chinea drives in 7, Austin Gomber tosses gem

Looking back on some weekend farm action

Here are some highlights from the weekend in the Cardinals’ farm system:

-In his first start with the Redbirds on Sunday, right-hander Dakota Hudson allowed four earned runs on six hits over seven innings. Hudson whiffed four and walked three, throwing 91 pitches - 59 for strikes.

-Palm Beach starter Jordan Hicks pitched five scoreless innings with six punchouts against the Yankees on Friday.

-Memphis outfielder Tyler O’Neill appears to be settling in well with the Redbirds. In Sunday’s game, O’Neill hit his 23rd home run of the season, a two-run shot.

-Johnson City Cardinals catcher Julio Rodriguez had five hits over the weekend, including his second homer of the season.

-Palm Beach Cardinals first baseman Chris Chinea had a career day on Saturday, going 2-for-5 with a grand slam and seven runs batted in in Palm Beach’s 12-3 rout of the Marauders.

-Springfield center fielder Oscar Mercado launched his ninth homer of the year on Sunday. Mercado is slashing .295/.344/.428 with 15 doubles, four triples, nine homers, and 33 stolen bases in 92 games.

-Second baseman Irving Lopez hit two long balls for Johnson City this weekend, his second and third long balls of the year.

-Springfield shortstop Tommy Edman had two doubles in Sunday’s game.

-Darren Seferina drew five walks this weekend, including four in Springfield’s 7-4 win on Friday.

-Springfield starter Austin Gomber won his fifth game of the year with a superb outing on Sunday, allowing just one run - a solo homer - over seven frames. He struck out five along the way.
