Cardinals Farm Journal: Week of 6/18-24

Mercado, Mejia, Flaherty, Hudson, Pearce, Sierra, & Gonzales earn mention in this week’s report

MLB: Game 2-Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Early in the week, the Palm Beach Cardinals secured the Florida State League South Division first-half title. The Cardinals sit 42-28 on the season and won the South with a 40-27 record.

The Texas League All-Star Game is this upcoming Tuesday, June 27. The Springfield Cardinals will have five representatives, including outfielder Oscar Mercado, infielder Alex Mejia, and pitchers Jack Flaherty, Dakota Hudson, and Matt Pearce.

And on Sunday morning, St. Louis Post-Dispatch beat writer Derrick Goold reported that outfielder Randal Grichuk has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis. A corresponding move has not been made as of the time this story was published, but Chad Huffman seems the most likely to be sent down.

John Fleming wrote a story a few days ago on how Grichuk profiles as a fourth outfielder on this team for the future, and I agree the points he made.

Player of the Week: Springfield Cardinals outfielder Magneuris Sierra

As should be to very little surprise, Sierra is the Player of the Week. Sierra went 11-for-29 between June 18 and 24 with five doubles and as many runs batted in. Sierra is batting .330 with fourteen extra-base hits in 30 games at Double-A.

Pitcher of the Week: Memphis Redbirds starting pitcher Marco Gonzales

In two starts during the span, Gonzales combined to allow two earned runs over thirteen frames with two walks and twelve strikeouts. Gonzales has a 2.70 earned run average and 1.13 WHIP in seven games and starts for Memphis this season.

Worth noting:

-Luke Weaver returned from a minor back injury on Friday, allowing one hit over 3 23 scoreless innings.

-Per MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch, Kolten Wong (forearm) remains a week away from beginning a rehab assignment. Paul DeJong will likely continue to garner playing time in his absence.
