Cardinals Farm Journal: Week of 6/4-10

Highlights from the last week of farm action

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

After some work at the team’s training complex in Florida, outfielder Randal Grichuk traveled north to Memphis and played an ample part in Friday night’s game: he walked it off in the tenth inning.

Player of the Week: Springfield Cardinals outfielder Oscar Mercado

The right-handed-hitting Mercado had a fine week for Springfield. Mercado, known more for his speed, hit for a solid average over the week, notching eight hits in 24 at-bats, including two doubles and a triple. Mercado stole a base and also scored four runs. For the season on the whole, Mercado is batting .322 with 37 runs scored in 56 games.

Pitchers of the Week: Memphis Redbirds starter Jack Flaherty and Peoria Chiefs starter Austin Sexton

In his second start at Triple-A that came on June 8, Flaherty carried on the success he displayed at Double-A to begin the year. Though he ultimately didn’t factor in the decision, Flaherty allowed just two hits and one walk over six innings, during which he whiffed eight batters.

Flaherty’s fine outing

With over 80 pitches, Sexton was pulled from Saturday’s game after logging seven hitless innings. Sexton’s only baserunner came on an error. After Brady Bowen pitched a clean eighth, the LumberKings managed a hit off Dewin Perez with one out in the ninth to spoil the possible no-hitter.
