Cardinals news and notes: Carpenter, fights, Dodgers

Not the best 49 games for the Cardinals (plus news and notes)

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Last night’s game, hoo boy. The Cardinals are now a very pedestrian 24-25, which equals their worst record in a 49-game span throughout all of 2016 - a campaign which seemed quite pedestrian in its entirety. They haven’t had a losing record after 49 games since 2007, which was not a fun season, and they haven’t made the playoffs when having a losing record after 49 games since 1996. And, when asking on Twitter how many times the Cardinals have blown a three-run lead this season (because it seems like an inordinate amount), I got back what I believe to be the correct answer:

Fair enough.

If you’re looking for some good news though, Albert Pujols is very close to 600 home runs.

Keep it up, Albert.

And here’s what you may have missed yesterday at VEB:

  • What I’ve always found so interesting about Matt Carpenter is his ability to evolve as a hitter. That hasn’t changed this year and Ben Markham says the stats indicate that he’s been unlucky (check that low batting average) and that he should heat up soon.
  • Josey Curtis has the weekend farm report. Catch up on Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly, Marco Gonzales and more.
  • As you surely know by now, there was something of a brawl during Monday’s Giants-Nats game. Lil Scooter has the details and was kind enough to include the picture with all the wonderful, flowing locks.
  • Lastly, there was the game. If for some odd reason you feel the need to relive it, here’s the game thread and recap.

That should do it, have a great Wednesday, everyone.
