Notes on the rehab assignments of Stephen Piscotty, Jhonny Peralta, and Tyler Lyons can be found in yesterday’s journal, as well as talk of Luke Weaver and Jack Flaherty, who will also make their way into the weekend report.
With that, here are some takeaways:
-Marco Gonzales was very sharp in his first start since Tommy John surgery with the Memphis Redbirds, logging seven innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts and just one walk.
-Memphis oufielder Nick Martini had a great weekend, going 5-for-9 with four runs scored and three runs driven in.
-Austin Gomber was roughed up on Sunday by the Travelers, who knocked him out of the game just two outs in after putting up a four spot in the run column - with the help of a fielding error and two walks.
-Sandy Alcantara took it on the chin, too, charged for seven earned runs over five frames on Saturday.
-Luke Weaver, in contrast, was marvelous, spinning seven innings of one-run ball to go with nine whiffs and only one base on balls.
-Palm Beach shortstop Leobaldo Pina had a rough day on Saturday, committing three errors in the contest to contribute to the Marauders’ twelve runs - just half of them considered earned.
-None of the Palm Beach hurlers in Friday’s 20-2 loss fared well at all, as Ryan Helsley, Ian McKinney, Anthony Ciavarella, and Steven De La Cruz, and Leobaldo Pina (yes, the shortstop who is mentioned above) were tagged for 20 runs on thirteen hits.. and fourteen walks.
-The big-league Cardinals were able to win their series with the Cubs, but the Chiefs couldn’t manage a single victory in their three-game set with the Iowa Cubs that began on Thursday.
-To end on a positive note: Jack Flaherty. That’s all.
~ Flaherty threw six quality innings on Friday to shut down the Travelers and lower his ERA through seven starts to 0.99.
