Everyone seems to agree that Kevin Siegrist is in a bad place right now. Decreased velocity, very high walk rates, he simply hasn’t been effective. Al Hrabosky of all people made note of it before Siegrist even threw his first pitch in the 6th inning of last night’s 7-5 loss to the Brewers. (You can read my series preview here.) So why he’s being brought in at a key point when the game is still very winnable is beyond me. After Siegrist gave up the two-run home run to Jett Bandy, the Brewers’ win probability jumped to near 91% per FanGraphs. As you know by now, the Cardinals did not recover.
Mike Matheny commented after the game that he’d like to see Carlos Martinez settle into games sooner, and noted that even though Martinez eventually found his groove, the team had already run into trouble. He’s right. But Matheny in turn didn’t do the team any favors with his bullpen management. Brett Cecil, Seung Hwan Oh, and to an extent Matt Bowman were all pretty rested heading into yesterday (although Bowman was called on to get one out on Wednesday, he only threw three pitches, he did, however, work a full inning on Tuesday). Martinez needs to be better, but so does Matheny.
Here’s what you may have missed yesterday at VEB:
- Joe Schwarz has some thoughts on Starling Marte’s PED suspension.
- Carlos Martinez is striking people out and that’s good for us and good for his foundation.
- Here’s the farm report from Triple A all the way to Peoria.
That’s it, have a great weekend, everyone.
