2017 VEB Community Projections: Jhonny Peralta

Will the veteran bounce back?

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals-Media Day Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

At this time last year, expectations were somewhat tempered for Jhonny Peralta. He had a decent start to the 2015 season but seemed to slow down by the end of the year. He was all set to be the starting shortstop with some talk that Jedd Gyorko might be able to give him the occasional break. Then Peralta hurt his wrist, lost his job to Aledmys Diaz and even when Diaz was hurt, Peralta stayed at third base.

Peralta ended up getting 313 plate appearances, hitting .260/.307/.408 with a wRC+ of 90 on the season. Those numbers wouldn’t be terrible for the very good defensive shortstop that Peralta was when he got to St. Louis. For a third baseman, they were less acceptable.

There is now talk a of a competition or perhaps a timeshare at third base between Peralta and Gyorko. Projections, which you can look at ZiPS here, Steamer here, and Baseball Prospectus ($) projections on their player pages, seem to peg Peralta as a slightly below average regular.
