Cardinals news and notes: Jose Fernandez, replay, Reds

Forget the Cardinals’ game, last night’s baseball was perfect. (Plus, news and notes.)

The Cardinals lost last night to the lowly Reds 15-2, which was their worst loss to Cincinnati since 1960. It could end up being crushing to their postseason chances. And yet if you paid attention to some of the other games going on around the league you know it was still a beautiful night of baseball, at least it was in Miami where the Marlins honored Jose Fernandez all throughout the night in their game against the Mets.

I’ll let the videos tell the story:

After the Marlins’ 7-2 victory, the team met again at the mound and left their hats and the game ball. It was a near-perfect moment in what has been a very tough week for the Marlins and baseball as a whole. Bless you, baseball.

Here’s what you may have missed yesterday at VEB:

Replay

It’s almost impossible to have a perfect replay system but I think most of us still expected it to be better than, well, this. Joe Schwarz asked some important questions about the current system in place in the aftermath of the awful call on Sunday night against the Cubs.

Jose Fernandez

Heather wrote some touching words about Jose Fernandez and why he was such a special person and a player so easy to root for. Please read it, and also observe the accompanying tweets from writers and teammates alike.

Cardinals vs. Reds

How about we just forget about last night and get them today. And tomorrow. And Thursday, too. But seriously, let’s forget about last night.

...On second thought, read the recap from last night. It’s funny, it’s true, and as a result it might just help you feel better about that entire game. (You can read the series preview, too.)

Have a great Tuesday, everyone.
