St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Report: Home runs for Randal Grichuk and Anthony Garcia, a great start for Ronnie Williams

New, comments

Plenty of wins on the farm last night, behind a mix of solid hitting and some good pitching performances.

This is one of the better player profile pictures, in my opinion.

Triple-A: Omaha 6 -- Memphis 4

  • Harrison Bader, LF, 1-for-5, K
  • Randal Grichuk, CF, 3-for-5, HR, 2 Runs, RBI
  • Anthony Garcia, RF, 3-for-5, HR, R, 2 RBI
  • Mike Mayers, 4 2/3 IP, 8 Ks, 2 BBs, 4 Hits, 2 Runs, ER
  • Thomas Lee, 3 1/3 IP, 2 Ks, 0 BBs, H
Despite the home runs from Grichuk and Garcia, Memphis was the only team in the organization to lose yesterday. as they dropped this one in the 10th inning. After giving up a two-out grand slam in the top of the tenth, the Redbirds responded with a two-run blast off the bat of Garcia in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't complete the comeback.

This was Grichuk's first game back in Memphis since being sent back down. His Memphis batting average is .310 and his SLG is .672, but his OBP stands at just .317.

Double-A: Tulsa 0 -- Springfield 2

  • Matt Carpenter, 2B, 0-for-4, 2 Ks, Fielding Error
  • Jacob Wilson, 3B, 1-for-4, 3 Ks, HR, R, RBI
  • Juan Herrera, SS, 0-for-3, K
  • Daniel Poncedeleon, 6 2/3 IP, K, 3 BBs, H, 0 Runs
  • Josh Lucas, 2 1/3 IP, 3 Ks, BB, 2 Hits, 0 Runs
Carpenter's rehab game didn't go as well as his first three, as he was unable to collect a hit and struck out twice, ending his 3-game hitting streak at AA, though he is still batting .333 in those four games.

Class A Advanced: Palm Beach 6 -- Charlotte 1

  • Vaughn Bryan, LF, 2-for-4, K, BB, RBI, SB, Picked off twice
  • Oscar Mercado, CF, 1-for-1, 2 BBs, 2B, R, SB (27)
  • Dylan Tice, 2B, 2-for-3, BB, K, R, RBI
  • Andrew Sohn, SS, 2-for-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI
Another small victory in Mercado's season-long battle with .200. He's back up to .199 with this effort. Also, note that with Edmundo Sosa now on the 7-day DL, Mercado is still playing in CF. To move to CF for a SS prospect like Sosa is not great, but certainly understandable, but to stay in CF so a non-prospect like Sohn can play is not a good sign. Perhaps Sosa's DL stay will be short-lived and they'd rather have Mercado get more reps at the new position, but a permanent move for Mercado to CF would, presumably, mean the organization doesn't think he can stick at SS, which was pretty much his only advanced ability.

Class A: Quad Cities 1 -- Peoria 6

  • Magneuris Sierra, CF, 2-for-4, 2 Ks, 2 Runs, CS
  • Brian O'Keefe, C, 2-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
  • Chris Chinea, DH, 2-for-3, BB, R, RBI
  • Ronnie Williams, 6 2/3 IP, 7 Ks, BB, 5 Hits, ER
  • Josh Wirsu, 1 1/3 IP, 2 Ks, H, 0 Runs
  • Tyler Bray, IP, 3 Ks, 0 Runs
This is Williams' first full-season league start, and it's a pretty impressive debut. Williams is just 20 years old, and a former 2nd round pick in the 2014 draft. Our own Red Baron listed him as the team's 10th best prospect heading into this season.

Class A Short-Season: State College 8 -- Auburn 3

  • Tommy Edman, SS, 2-for-4, BB, 2 Runs
Edman has been pretty great so far, showing decent contact skills with some power, and very advanced approach at the plate. It's about what you'd expect from a middle round pick from a good college team playing in a short-season league, but it's good to see anyway.

Rookie DSL: DSL Yankees2 4 -- DSL Cardinals 14

  • Wadye Ynfante, CF-RF, 2-for-5, BB, K, 2B, 3 Runs, RBI, SB
  • Brian Sanchez, RF, 0-for-2, BB
  • Carlos Soto, C, 0-for-2, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, 2 Runs, RBI

Rookie GCL: GCL Cardinals 3 -- GCL Marlins 2

  • Dylan Carlson, CF, 2-for-6, K, CS
  • Walker Robbins, LF, 1-for-5, 3 Ks
  • Jonathan Murders, 2B, 1-for-4
  • Mike O'Reilly, 6 IP, 6 Ks, 0 BBs, 3 Hits, ER
The GCL Cardinals won this one in 12 innings.

Today's Probables:

Memphis: Deck McGuire

Springfield: TBD

Palm Beach: Matt Pearce

Peoria: Derian Gonzalez

State College: Bryan Dobzanski

DSL Cardinals: TBA
