St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Report: Another Impressive Start for Luke Weaver; Anthony Garcia and Big Dave Washington Homer for Memphis; Paul DeJong Hits His 19th Home Run for The S-Cards; Tommy Edman Goes Deep for State College

Oh hey
Oh hey
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Memphis played a double-header, and Palm Beach was off. Johnson City had its game shortened by rain, which also washed out the second half of a scheduled double-header. Luke Weaver turned in the performance of the night with 8 strong innings.

Triple-A: Oklahoma City 5 - Memphis 2 (7 Innings)

  • Charlie Tilson (CF): 0-3
  • Harrison Bader (LF): 0-3, K
  • Efren Navarro (1B): 1-3, R, HR, RBI
  • Jose Martinez (RF): 2-3, R, 2B, SB
  • Carson Kelly (C): 1-3
  • Jeremy Heffner (SP): 4.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

Triple-A: Memphis 6 - Oklahoma City 5 (7 Innings)

  • Charlie Tilson (CF): 1-3, RBI
  • Anthony Garcia (LF): 1-3, R, HR, RBI
  • Dave Washington (RF): 1-2, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB, K
  • Mike Ohlman (C): 2-3, R, 2 RBI, K
  • Kurt Heyer (SP): 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER,12BB, 2 K
  • Sam Tuivailala (RP): 1 IP, 3 K

Anthony Garcia is doing his best to remain on at least the fringes of prospect relevance. He has hit 3 homers since being called back up from Springfield on July 19th, those 3 home runs matches his season total from the 100 at bats he had during his first stint in AAA...Sam Tuivailala has pitched into some tough luck this year, he is sporting an abnormally low strand rate and a very high BABIP, but he's also been his own worst enemy at times with a BB% pushing 10%. But he has also only walked two batters since June 9th (an extremely arbitrary end point) so hopefully if he can limit his free passes and things break his way his ERA will start to match up with his peripherals.

Double A: Springfield 10 - NW Arkansas 2

  • Jacob Wilson (2B): 1-3, R, RBI, 2 BB, K
  • Brandon Moss (1B): 0-3
  • Paul DeJong (3B): 1-4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K
  • Casey Turgeon (DH): 1-2, RBI, BB
  • Luke Weaver (SP): 8 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 HR

There are some new faces in Springfield. Brandon Moss is in town on a rehab assignment, Jacob Wilson is down from Memphis, trying to regain some traction in the system. He had a very good 2014 split between Palm Beach and Springfield, but has struggled above A ball the last two years, and has been banged up this year to boot. Casey Turgeon is up from Palm Beach. He has hit at various spots in the low minors since being drafted in 2014. His best offensive attributes are his contact ability, patience, and gap power. He's walked almost as much as he's struck out in the Florida State League, and he's racked up doubles and even a few triples, but a move to the hitter friendly Texas League may make homers a bigger part of his game. He's most often listed as a 2B, but he is increasingly being deployed at 3B and LF, so he may be becoming more of a utility bat. Although the Cardinals would do well to get him some time at the keystone if only to so he gets the standard Springfield Second Baseman boost (AKA The Hoffpauir Effect)...Luke Weaver is second in the Texas League in ERA, posting very impressive BB and K rates and he's keeping the ball in the park. He appears to have AA hitters figured out at the moment, and even though it has only been 10 starts he may be in line for a promotion, especially if the big club continues to raid the Memphis rotation.

Class A: Quad Cities 8 - Peoria 7 (11 Innings)

  • Magneuris Sierra (CF): 1-6, R, 2B, 3 RBI, 5 K, SB
  • Jose Martinez (SS): 2-5, R, 2B, BB, 2 K
  • Dylan Tice (2B): 1-5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
  • Brian O'Keefe (C): 0-4, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Chris Chinea (DH): 1-5, R, BB, 2 K
  • Juan Perez (SP): 1.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 3 HR

Jose Martinez has hit 3 doubles since being called up from State College last week, which is one more double than he had coming into the week. He has displayed almost no power, and doesn't appear to be an effective base stealer, but he is willing to take a walk and doesn't strike out much. And just the fact that he is a 19 year-old shortstop who isn't getting the bat knocked out of his hands in A ball means he is probably a bigger return than anybody could have expected for Tony Cruz's arb years.

Class A Short Season: State College 2 - Williamsport 1

  • Tommy Edman (SS): 1-5, R, HR, RBI, K
  • Vince Jackson (DH): 1-4, R, 2B, SB
  • Jeremy Martinez (C): 2-3, 2 2B, RBI, BB
  • Danny Hudzina (3B): 1-4
  • Carson Cross (SP): 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Rookie: Johnson City 6 - Kingsport 2 (4 Innings)

  • J.R. Davis (2B): 1-3, R, RBI, SB
  • Allen Cordoba (SS): 3-3, 2 R, 2 SB
  • Matt Fiedler (LF): 0-3, R, RBI, K
  • Andrew Knizner (1B): 3-3, 2B, 2 RBI
  • Yariel Gonzales (3B): 0-1, 2 BB
  • Bryce Denton (DH): 0-3
  • Ramon Santos (SP): 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K

Rookie: Kingsport @ Johnson City - PPD (Rain)

Rookie: GCL Cardinals 10 - GCL Astros 2

  • Delvin Perez (SS): 0-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, K
  • Dennis Ortega (C): 1-4, BB
  • Jonathan Murders (DH): 2-5, R, 3 K
  • Walker Robbins (LF): 3-5, R, RBI
  • Mike O'Reilly (SP): 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Dominican Summer League: DSL Cardinals 10 - DSL Tigers 1
