St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Report: Jake Woodford's career-best start, Brian Sanchez continues his tear through the DSL, and 1st rounders Delvin Perez and Dylan Carlson collect two hits apiece

The farm was 3-3 as Memphis' game was postponed.

Perez has been rewarding the Cardinals' "gamble" on him so far.

Triple-A: Postponed

A double header is scheduled for today to make up the missing game.

Double-A: Springfield 5 -- Tulsa 7

  • Nick Martini, CF, 1-for-3, BB, K, HR, R, 3 RBI
  • Casey Turgeon, 2B, 2-for-4, BB, 2 Runs
  • Paul DeJong, 3B, 0-for-4, K
  • Luke Voit, 1B, 2-for-5, RBI

Class A Advanced: Palm Beach 3 -- Fort Myers 7

  • Cole Lankford, 3B, 2-for-4
  • Edmundo Sosa, SS, 2-for-4, K, 3B, R
  • Oscar Mercado, CF, 1-for-3, BB, K, 2 Runs, SB (25th)
Mercado continues his back-and-forth struggle with the Mendoza line. After getting his batting average above water after two consecutive 2-hit games, he was 0-for-16 heading into this one. His single brings him up to .196 on the season. Interestingly the 2nd-round pick, drafted for his defensive skills at short, was making his 5th start in CF. While he racked up a few dozen errors at short annually, this is not uncommon for rangy shortstops at lower levels of the minors. This is most likely a temporary move to accommodate Sosa's call-up to Palm Beach, as Sosa has shown a bit more potential offensively. Hopefully we'll see Mercado move back to short in the future, as if he can't hit well enough to stick at short, it's highly unlikely his offense will ever merit a spot in the outfield.

Class A: Peoria 8 -- Quad Cities 2

  • Magneuris Sierra, CF, 2-for-5, RBI, SB (23rd)
  • Jose Martinez, SS, 0-for-4, K, R
  • Brian O'Keefe, DH, 0-for-3, BB, R
  • Jake Woodford, 7 IP, 9 Ks, 0 BBs, 5 Hits, 2 HR, 2 ER, Successful Pickoff
Martinez is the SS the Cardinals acquired in exchange for Tony Cruz last December.

Woodford was the Cardinals pick in the supplemental round of last season's draft, making him the 39th overall pick. He's had a sparkling 2.81 ERA so far, though he's been pretty fortunate on BABIP and/or sequencing, as his FIP is 3.59. This is his best start all year, as it sets a career-high in Ks (previous mark was seven), without allowing any free passes. He has done much better in the latter regard of late, walking batters in each of his first seven starts (17 total), but just eight free passes in his last nine starts. Four of those last nine outings came without free passes as well.

Rookie DSL: DSL Cardinals 3 -- DSL Tigers 6

  • Jonathan Machado, CF, 0-for-4, BB
  • Carlos Soto, DH, 0-for-3, 2 BBs, K, R
  • Brian Sanchez, RF, 3-for-4, 2B, RBI
  • Leandro Cedeno, C, 0-for-4, BB, 2 Ks
Soto, one of this year's international signees, has shown a strong willingness to take balls, as he has 12 walks so far this season in 14 games. However, he hasn't been as impressive in contact or power, keeping his OPS at .721, in spite of a .381 OBP.

This is Sanchez's 2nd season in the DSL and he is crushing everything. He strikes out a fair bit at 21.2%, but he's also drawing walks 12.4% of the time, and has an ISO of .360. His wOBA is .546. Even with a .418 BABIP, that's ... wow. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does at the next levels.

Rookie GCL: GCL Nationals 1 -- GCL Cardinals 3

  • Delvin Perez, SS, 2-for-4, 2 RBI
  • Dylan Carlson, CF, 2-for-4, K, R
  • Jonathan Murders, 2B, 1-for-4, K, R
  • Walker Robbins, LF, 2-for-4, 2B
Nice to see the Cardinals' top two drafted position players with multi-hit games. Perez has been particularly successful so far, hitting .318/.367/.427, though that is largely built on a .393 BABIP.

Rookie: Danville 5 -- Johnson City 10

  • Matt Fiedler, LF, 1-for-5, 2B, K, RBI
  • Andrew Knizner, 1B, 3-for-5, 2B, 2 Runs, 3 RBI
  • Joshua Lopez, DH, 2-for-5, 2B, K, 2 RBI
  • Bryce Denton, 3B, 1-for-4, BB, K, R, Error

Today's Probables:

Memphis 1: Jeremy Hefner

Memphis 2: Kurt Heyer

Springfield: Luke Weaver

Peoria: Juan Perez

State College: Carson Cross

Johnson City 1: Ramon Santos

Johnson City 2: David Oca (This is a makeup game from 7/8.)

DSL Cardinals: Johan Oviedo

GCL Cardinals: Mike O'Reilly
